The zen balcony

Too narrow to be of any use and too long to be ignored, this balcony was perfect candidate for an inward looking japanese-inspired garden. A traditional water fountain gurgles away into a terra-cota urn, while the buddha smiles serenely out from amidst the foliage as if to say: Relax, you’re home!

A Transformation with traditional Art

The spectacular view from this beautiful Basavanagudi balcony was only slightly marred by a utilitarian clothes-stand in an alcove on the right. A rollable bamboo screen now keeps the utility area away from view while the balcony is being used. A water feature gurgles away happily in a corner, while a sunlit wall now supports a flowering climber on a trellis. Our work was made even easier with the entire family pitching in wholeheartedly with the potting and installation. The piece de resistance however, is a Warli art mural custom-created for the family by our artist.

A slice of Europe

This balcony was a grey, dismal concrete strip before we got our hands on it. An English picket fence, new walls and flooring, bright planters and a trellis transformed it into a piece of continental Europe. And now, as the proud owners walk under the clematis and jasmine covered arch and into their own little piece of paradise, they find it hard to believe how dramatic a difference their new garden has made to their lives.

A bit of old world Bangalore

The only sunny spot in this home was this tiny strip area atop a stone bench and along the parapet. A beautiful old tulsi planter now hosts the colours of the season, while its companions soak up the sun around it. In due course, a beautiful ficus in a large planter, crocuses, roses, anthuriums and a lily pond – all joined the sunny spot. Now, a different corner bursts into bloom every couple of months with an entirely new set of blossoms. A true blue Bangalore balcony!

Tip of the day

A combination of high temperature, low humidity and dry compost causes plants to wilt rapidly and foliage to shrivel.
